Pedaling to the Capitol

Bike Advocates Pedal to the Capitol Steps

On May 5, cyclists from across the state descended upon Harrisburg to remind the state government and all of Pennsylvania's citizens that bicycles are an essential form of transportation.

Far too often, cyclists are marginalized in the transportation policy debate, resulting in infrastructure investments that hinder cyclists from safely using the roads. For the countless citizens who cannot or choose not to drive, bicycles provide an option for mobility. To address these concerns, leaders from regional pedestrian and cycling advocacy groups from around Pennsylvania have joined together to for
PA Walks and Bikes, the first statewide advocacy organization dedicated to promoting people-powered transportation policy.

Michele Barret, founding member of PA Walks and Bikes, was instrumental in organizing this successful event.
Check out this video of Michele speaking on the capitol steps, along with State Representative Dave Kessler's insightful comments about the relationship of cycling to smart growth.

Pa Walks and Bikes, a collaborative effort of several Pennsylvania bicyclist and pedestrian advocacy organizations, invites you to join us at the Capitol for a Bike Rally on May 5th at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate Bike Month.  Bicyclists will be arriving at the Capitol from the staging area at the Farm Show and assembling at the west side of the Capitol.

Dave Kessler is the lead person organizing this event -- and John Caltigirone his Leg. Assist. has been AMAZING for us -- planning and organizing many of the details.  He's so supportive.  It is important for us to organize a large turnout for this event -- and we are hoping for more than 200 people.  Right now -  we have pledges from Phili for 20 bikers, 10 from Pittsburgh, and we have the support of lots of organizations -- but no other committed numbers.  I think it is particularly important for Berks County to show in large numbers -- maybe we can get 50 people to attend?  To support Dave's understanding of Smart Growth, Open Space Preservation and walkable communities?  Help to gather enough people to go to Harrisburg on Tuesday, May 5 to make an impressive showing.

Representative David Kessler and Senator Michael O’Pake will be presenting House and Senate Resolutions and we anticipate Governor Ed Rendell’s proclaiming May as Bike Month in Pennsylvania.

Secretaries Biehler, James and Zahorchak have also been invited to participate.  Invitations to attend the Bike Rally will be extended to House and Senate members by Representative Kessler and Senator O’Pake.

We would especially welcome members your group to join our Bike Ride to the Capitol.  We are assembling at the Farm Show Complex at 8:30 a.m. with a ride start at approximately 9:15 a.m.

Please contact CCoET Associate and WalkBikeBerks President Michele Barrett at 610-779-9702 or mbarrett@walkbikeberks.org if you are able to attend the Bike Rally.
